Eastern Erie County's Snow Corridor

Tree Removal in Alden often follows a winter storm. In the October 12-13, 2006 storm, the National Weather Service listed Alden with Depew and Lancaster at 24 inches, the highest totals it reported, falling on trees still in full leaf. In November 2014, Alden sat inside the corridor that had more than 4 to 5 feet of snow by the second day, when numerous trees across the area failed under the weight. Trees that lost limbs in those storms can carry hidden decay where the wood tore.

Town and village

The town covers about 34.5 square miles and had 9,706 residents in 2020. It was split from Clarence on March 27, 1823, and the Village of Alden, along U.S. Route 20 on the east side, incorporated in 1856. Crittenden, at Genesee Street and Crittenden Road, is the other main crossroads. Village lots are compact; outside the village, homes sit on larger parcels with fencerows, woodlots and big yard trees, often far from the road.

Brush schedules depend on where you live

The town collects brush by week: north of Broadway on the first full week of the month and south of Broadway on the third week, set out by 6:30 a.m. Monday of your pickup week. In the village, brush up to 4 inches in diameter goes to the curb on the first Monday of the month, butt ends toward the street. Leaves are handled separately. A whole tree is well beyond either program, so our estimates include chipping and hauling, or cutting firewood if you want it.

NYSEG lines

Alden is NYSEG territory. A March 2019 NYSEG pole fire cut power to almost 2,500 customers in the town and over 1,000 in the village. Long rural road frontages put a lot of trees close to distribution lines. The utility handles trimming around its main lines, but the service wire to your house is the owner's concern, and it has to be disconnected or covered before we cut near it. That takes a call a few days ahead.

Creeks and wet ground

Ellicott Creek flows west through the north-central part of the town and Cayuga Creek through the south. Low ground near them stays wet, and trees there can uproot rather than break in wind. If a tree near a creek or a wet spot has started to lean, have it looked at.

Estimates

We walk the property, mark each tree, check wires and access, and give you a written price per tree. On rural lots, trees with clear landing zones can sometimes be felled whole, which keeps costs down. Get a free estimate

Alden Questions

A tree along the road is touching the power lines. Can you remove it?

Not while it is in contact with the line. Call NYSEG first; trees touching distribution lines are the utility's to make safe. Once the line is clear or de-energized, the rest of the tree can be dealt with.

We live north of Broadway. When can I put brush out?

The town collects north of Broadway on the first full week of the month, set out by 6:30 a.m. that Monday. For a removal, we usually haul the wood so you are not waiting on the schedule.

Can you clear a fencerow on our property?

Yes. We can remove the dead and hazardous trees, keep the healthy ones if you want a windbreak, and chip or leave the wood.

A storm bent our spruce over. Can it be saved?

Small, young evergreens sometimes recover. A mature spruce that stays bowed, or one with a cracked trunk or lifted roots, will not straighten and becomes a hazard. We can tell you which you have.

Do you grind stumps too?

Yes, as part of the removal quote or on its own.
