Tree Removal in Lewiston, NY

A Town Split by the Ridge

Tree Removal in Lewiston depends a lot on which level you live on. The southern part of the town sits on top of the Niagara Escarpment, where the upscale Lewiston Heights neighborhood was built, and NY 104 climbs the ridge as Lewiston Road. Below it, the historic Village of Lewiston stretches along the Niagara River on the western side of town. Trees on the Heights grow on the edge of a slope and catch wind from every direction; trees in the village grow on older, flatter lots crowded with homes, porches and garages.

On the Heights

Hilltop and slope lots raise specific problems. A tree near the edge of a grade can lean downhill over time as soil creeps, and its root plate is often shallow where rock is close to the surface. When it has to come down, felling it down the slope is rarely an option if there is a house or driveway below. We take those trees down in pieces, lower the wood on rigging, and plan where it can be safely staged before it is chipped.

In the village

Lewiston was the first European settlement in Western New York, and the village has the old houses to show it. Big shade trees on narrow lots mean careful sectional work, protected roofs and fences, and sometimes a neighbor's cooperation to set a rope or stand a ground worker. On historic properties, we keep heavy equipment off old walks and lawns and use mats or hand-carry wood when needed.

Big water, big open spaces

The town covers about 41 square miles, including the 172-acre Artpark state park, Joseph Davis State Park and the 1,900-acre Lewiston Reservoir that feeds the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant. Open water and open ground leave a lot of trees exposed. Western New York's big wind events have hit the lower Niagara hard; on November 6, 2005, nearby Youngstown recorded a 64 mph gust as trees and lines came down across five counties. Lewiston's riverside and hilltop trees face the same kind of exposure.

Who lives here

The town had 15,944 residents in 2020. Census QuickFacts shows a 76.4% owner-occupied rate, a median owner-occupied value of $261,600, and 26.1% of residents aged 65 or older, a higher share than most nearby towns. For many owners, the right plan is a single visit that deals with the riskiest tree and any heavy limbs over the roof, with the rest scheduled over time.

Getting started

Call or send a request with photos if you can. We visit, look at the tree, the slope and the access, check for wires to the house, and write up the work and price. The utility needs a few days' notice to disconnect or cover your service line before we cut near it, and we plan around that. Get a free estimate

Lewiston Questions

Our house on the Heights is below a big tree on the slope. Is that a risk?

It can be, especially if the tree leans toward the house, the soil on the uphill side is cracking, or the trunk has decay. A tree uphill of a home deserves a closer look than one on flat ground. We will check it from both above and below.

Do you work in the village as well as the town?

Yes. We work across the Town of Lewiston, including the village, the Heights and the rest of the town.

Can you remove a tree without driving onto our lawn?

Usually. Wood can be lowered and carried to the driveway or street, and equipment can stay on hard surfaces. If a machine must cross the lawn, we use mats.

Is it safe to leave a dead tree standing in the woods behind the house?

If it could not reach the house, a driveway, a path or a neighbor's property when it falls, it can often be left for wildlife. If it could reach any of those, plan to remove it, because dead wood gets more brittle and harder to climb each year it stands.

Can stumps be ground on a sloped yard?

Yes, on most slopes a grinder can work safely. Very steep spots may be cut flush instead. We will tell you which applies at the estimate.
