The Ash Problem in Western New York
Ash tree removal has become one of the most common jobs in Erie County since emerald ash borer arrived. The beetle was first confirmed in the county in June 2011, when a park worker spotted adults on a small group of ash in South Park, and that same year it was found near the airport in Lancaster. Its larvae tunnel under the bark and cut off the flow of water and nutrients, and once a tree is heavily infested it declines quickly. With roughly one in five trees in the county an ash, according to a 2016 report, the beetle has reshaped parks, streets and back yards across the region.
Is your tree an ash?
Ash branches and buds grow in opposite pairs, not staggered. Each leaf is compound, with several leaflets along a central stem, usually five to nine. The bark on a mature tree forms a tight diamond pattern of ridges. If those three things match, you almost certainly have an ash, and if it is still alive in Erie County, it is either being treated or it is on borrowed time.
Signs of borer damage
The first sign is often thinning at the top of the crown, with smaller and fewer leaves. Woodpeckers chip away the outer bark hunting larvae, leaving pale patches on the trunk. Vertical splits open in the bark, clumps of sprouts appear along the trunk and at the base, and leaves may brown and drop early in late summer. Under loose bark you may see S-shaped tunnels, and the beetles leave small D-shaped exit holes.
Why waiting makes it harder
A live ash with sound wood can be climbed and rigged like any other tree. A dead ash is different. The wood dries, turns brittle and snaps instead of bending, branches drop without warning, and the trunk may not safely hold a climber or the force of a lowering rope. A removal that a climber could handle in one season can, two or three years later, need an aerial lift or a crane, and that costs more. If a declining ash can reach your house, your driveway or the street, the cheapest time to take it down is usually now.
Treat or remove?
Ash that are still mostly healthy can sometimes be protected with insecticide treatments applied by a state-certified pesticide applicator, and several towns here have chosen to treat their best ash, Amherst among them. Treatment is ongoing, though, and does not bring back a crown that is already mostly gone. We will tell you honestly which of your ash are worth asking a treatment provider about and which are past saving.
What happens to the wood
New York restricts moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles from its source, a rule put in place largely because of this beetle. Ash from your yard stays local: chipped, left with you as firewood, or taken to local processing.
What Ash Removal Covers
Each ash is judged on its own condition, because a live ash and a dead one come down differently.
Declining ash
Ash with thinning crowns and early borer signs, taken down while the wood is still sound enough to climb and rig.
Standing dead ash
Brittle dead trees removed with methods that keep people out of the crown, often using an aerial lift or crane.
Groups and tree lines
Several ash along a back lot line or woodland edge, planned together so access and cleanup are done once.
Local wood handling
Logs and chips kept within the area under New York's firewood rules, or left with you to burn at home.

Ash Tree Removal Price Ranges
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Ash tree removal (HomeGuide, national) | $650 to $2,000 |
| Diseased tree with brittle wood (Angi, national) | $400 to $900 |
| Medium tree, Buffalo (Homeyou) | $552 to $748 |
| Crane day rate (Angi, national) | about $250 to $600 |
| Hard-to-reach or unsafe site (Angi) | 25% to 50% added |
Ranges from HomeGuide (2026), Angi (2026) and Homeyou's Buffalo guide (October 2026). A dead ash that cannot be climbed safely costs more than a live one of the same size. Your written estimate is the price.
How Ash Removal Works
1. Confirm the species and condition
We confirm the tree is an ash, look at how much crown is left and test whether the wood is still sound.
2. Choose the method
Climbing and rigging for sound trees; lift or crane for dead and brittle ones. The quote says which.
3. Take it down
Limbs and trunk removed in sections, with brittle wood lowered gently rather than dropped.
4. Keep the wood local
Brush chipped, logs left or processed nearby, and the stump ground if you add it.

Ash Tree Removal Questions
Do all ash trees in Buffalo have emerald ash borer?
The borer is established across Erie County, and untreated ash here are very likely to be infested sooner or later. A tree can carry the beetle for a few years before the crown shows it.
My ash still has leaves. Is it too early to remove it?
Not if it is already thinning and you have decided not to treat it. Removing an ash while it is still alive is usually safer and less expensive than waiting until it is dead and brittle.
Can I keep the ash wood for firewood?
Yes, burning it on your own property is fine. What New York restricts is moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles from where it was cut.
Who removes a dead ash between the sidewalk and the street?
That tree belongs to the City of Buffalo. Request an inspection through 311, since the city removes street trees that are dead or dying.
Should I replace my ash with another tree?
Many people do. Pick a species that is not already common on your street, so one pest or disease cannot take out every tree at once, and keep large species away from the house and overhead wires.
