From Wheat Fields to Backyards

Tree Removal in Wheatfield looks different from removal in the older inner suburbs. The town got its name from the wheat grown on its clay loam soil, and for much of its history it was farm country, with the River Road area a prosperous farm district by the 1920s. The biggest growth came from the 1980s on; between 2000 and 2010 alone the population grew 28.6%. Many homes now sit on what used to be fields, and the large trees on those lots are often the old fencerow and windbreak trees that farmers left between parcels.

Fencerow and windbreak trees

Trees that grew up along a farm fence or a windbreak row grew with open fields on one side and competition on the other. They are often lopsided, with heavy limbs reaching toward where the field used to be, and sometimes contain old wire grown into the trunk. When a subdivision is built around them, construction can also damage their roots. A decade or two later, those trees start dropping limbs or dying back. Removing them takes planning: old fence wire can damage chainsaw chains and is a hazard for the crew, so we look for it before cutting.

Clay soil and water

Clay loam holds water well, which is good for wheat and hard on tree roots after long wet spells. Saturated clay offers poor anchorage, and trees with shallow root systems can tip in a strong wind after heavy rain. Wheatfield sits on low, flat ground at about 577 feet, and the Niagara River forms part of its western border. If a tree in your yard has developed a new lean after a wet spring, or the soil has cracked or lifted on one side, call before the next windstorm.

Wind with nothing to stop it

Open, flat country lets wind build. In the March 8, 2017 windstorm, Niagara County Emergency Services reported about 20,000 people without power and numerous large trees down across the county. Lone trees on open lots, and the end trees of windbreak rows, take the brunt of storms like that.

Who lives here

Wheatfield had 18,638 residents in 2020. Census QuickFacts shows a 76.4% owner-occupied rate, a median owner-occupied value of $314,900 and 2.43 people per household. Many newer homes have young trees that mainly need pruning, while the older farm-era trees on the same lots are the ones most likely to need removal.

Hamlets we cover

We work throughout the town, from Bergholz near the airport and Walmore in the northwest, through St. Johnsburg near the town center, to Shawnee, Nashville and Sawyer along Niagara Falls Boulevard by the North Tonawanda line. Larger lots often allow felling in one piece where there is clear ground, which can keep costs down compared with sectional removal. Get a free estimate

Wheatfield Questions

There is a row of old trees along our back lot line. Do they all need to go?

Rarely all at once. Usually a few are dead or declining and the rest can stay with some pruning. We assess each tree in the row and mark which ones are hazards.

Can you fell a tree in one piece on a big lot?

When there is enough clear ground and nothing in the way, yes, and that is often quicker and cheaper. We check the lean, the wind and the landing zone first.

What if there is old fence wire inside the trunk?

It happens with former fencerow trees. We look for it before cutting and cut around it where we can. It does not stop a removal, but it can change how the trunk is cut up.

Our newer subdivision tree is only 15 years old but already looks bad. Why?

Young trees on former farmland often struggle with compacted clay, poor drainage and construction damage to roots. Some can be helped with pruning and better mulching. If the trunk is cracked or the crown is mostly dead, replacing it is usually the better plan.

Do you grind stumps after removals?

Yes. Grinding can be added to the removal or priced separately, deep enough to replant or reseed.
