Living on the Lake
Tree Removal in Evans is shaped by the lake. The town has about 12 miles of Lake Erie waterfront, with lakeside communities such as Highland-on-the-Lake, Lake Erie Beach and Angola on the Lake strung along the shore, the Village of Angola in the south, Derby in the northwest, and Eighteen Mile Creek, known for its fossil beds, forming the northern town line. Trees near the water live with constant wind, spray and, in winter, ice, and those inland grow on open ground with little shelter.
Wind records
The National Weather Service's history pages show what the lakeshore deals with. On April 6, 1985, a deep storm sent a 74 mph gust across the Buffalo airport and caused power outages in Evans and Angola as trees came down across the region. On January 10, 1979, blizzard conditions in the South Towns dropped more than a foot of snow in Evans and halted traffic. Shoreline trees that have survived decades of that often lean inland and have one-sided crowns, which puts their weight right over the cottages and driveways behind them.
Cottage lots
Many lakeside lots are small and built close together. That means sectional removal: climbing the tree, cutting it into manageable pieces and lowering them on rigging so nothing lands on a roof, deck or the neighbor's place. Bluff-top lots also need care, because a tree near the edge may be helping to hold the soil; sometimes reducing or removing the top while leaving the stump and roots in place is the better choice for the bluff.
Town brush rules
The town collects brush from April 1 to October 31. Piles must be neat, with cut ends toward the road and no roots, dirt or metal, and no larger than 4 feet wide, 3 feet high and 6 feet deep, with branches 8 inches or less in diameter. Leaf collection is at the Town Park starting October 27 and is free. A removal produces more than a single pile, so we chip and haul unless you would like the wood left for burning.
Who lives here
Evans had 15,308 residents in 2020. Census QuickFacts shows an 86.2% owner-occupied rate, a median owner-occupied value of $176,500 and 24.1% of residents aged 65 or older. Many lakeside owners would rather deal with one risky tree at a time. Estimates are itemized by tree, so you can do the most urgent one first.

Evans Questions
Should I remove a tree on the edge of the bluff?
Not always. Roots can help hold a bluff together. If the tree is dead or leaning toward the house, removing the trunk while leaving the stump and roots in place is often the better choice. We look at the slope before recommending anything.
Do you work in the Village of Angola too?
Yes. The village has its own yard waste rules, with brush bundled no longer than 4 feet and no thicker than 4 inches, so a removal there is usually chipped and hauled.
Can you work on a cottage lot where we can't get a truck in?
Yes. Wood can be lowered and carried out to the road by hand or with small equipment, and the chipper stays on the street.
A tree at our lake cottage is leaning more each year. What does that mean?
A lean that is increasing is a warning sign, especially if the soil on the side away from the lean is lifting or cracking. Wind off the lake keeps pushing it the same way. Have it looked at before the next big blow.
Do you grind stumps?
Yes. Grinding can be added to any removal, and on bluff lots we may recommend leaving the roots in place for soil stability.
